It’s now Dr. Maddon
Rays manager Joe Maddon was all smiles Thursday after receiving his honorary doctor of letters degree from Lafayette College. About 200 people attended the public on-campus ceremony in Easton, Pa., as Maddon spoke about his experiences at Lafayette – where he attended and played football and baseball before going into pro baseball – and some about his methods as a manager. I am curious as to general opinion why most companies select position candidates based on a college degree as compared to years of practical experience? From a financial aspect, an experienced individual may command a higher entry salary, however, the practical experience should offset the cost by reducing the time of the learning curve as well as provide a source for historical information attained at other organizations.

This situation happens quite often in the business and manufacturing worlds. For example, I have worked with a major automotive manufacturer for over ten years. This manufacturer will not hire anyone (low level to upper management) without a degree, period. However, they currently have people in positions that significantly affect the financial success of the company, simply because they have a degree. There are individuals that have degrees in Physical Education, Literature and Psychology performing duties in areas of quality and engineering. How does this make business sense? The degree got them in the door, however, their practical experience acquired has allowed them to skate by to this point. Does this not support the argument of practical experience over classroom experience? After all, anyone currently functioning in a given industry would conceivably be up-to-date with current technology in any regard.

I am currently in college but i am finding that I am just aimlessly wondering around my college life, but I am very interested in the commercial real estate field. however I know that to get a brokers license it is not required to have a degree one just needs to have a certain amount of hours and past the needed tests. Although I do imagine with this brokerage firms might not hire someone because they do not have the degree of the four year college. I would like to get some insight if the commercial real estate brokers require or want a four year degree. any help would be great!

hey,
my friend is interested in making films. she’s currently enrolled in a 4-year art school in vancouver (emily carr), where she will receive a bachelor’s degree in media studies. however, she really loves living in seattle and is considering coming to seattle and attending seattle central community college to get an associates degree in film & video communications.
i know that in general a bachelor’s degree is more appealing to employers than an associates, but is there any reason to believe that this concept holds true in the film industry?
